The Mercury News quoted McManis Faulkner partner, Abimael Bastida, in an article headlined, “San Jose: Excessive force lawsuit from 2020 George Floyd protests cleared for trial.” The piece discusses Kyle Johnson’s lawsuit against the City of San Jose, in which Bastida represents Johnson.
In 2020, Johnson was assaulted by police who shot him with a projectile during a George Floyd protest in downtown San Jose, resulting in severe leg injuries and medical hardships.
“He is still dealing with the ongoing residual injuries he sustained from attending the protests,” Bastida said. “He’s not only requesting damages for that, but also seeking redress for the interference with the exercise of his exercising his First Amendment speech. He walked out of a peaceful protest with a very serious, lifelong injury.”
